PROGRAM for MARCH 8
The university organized a program for March 8, International Women’s Day. Mr. Rector, in his opening speech, spoke about the history and importance of this day. Ms.Rabiyet Aslanova, MP, took the floor and mentioned special attributes of the Turkish women and their contribution to Turkish culture, and their becoming a sample for the other women of the world in terms of their own way of spiritual life. Following the speeches, the audience did have a good time with performances and quiz shows delivered by the members of Kardelen student club.

SECOND SUMMER SCHOOL
Seventeen students from Germany and one from Great Britain formed the student body for the second summer school on the political and economic situation of the Caucasus. Mr. Ambassador P. Stankina spoke to the students during a visit he paid to the university, and informed them about the current political position between Germany and Azerbaijan. He also suggested the students see the regions of Azerbaijan where German heritage still remains, tying the two countries. Mr.Elmar Qasimov also welcomed the students at the Ministry of Education and delivered some important information about the on-going educational developments in the country. The program went on for another week in Georgia.

COMMEMORATION of KHOJALI GENOCIDE

The university organized an event dedicated to Khojali Genocide on its 15th anniversary. Mr.Rector, in his speech, stated that although it’s been 15 years now, people still have vivid images about this day written to the book of history with bloody letters when 613 people including the elderly, children and women were murdered in the most tyrannical way. Azerbaijan commemorates the genocide with sorrow every year. Mr.Sanic also stated that Turkey has shared Azerbaijan’s happiness and sorrow. The Chair of World Azerbaijani Congress Mr. Muradov said that the memory should remain in the youth’s mind and stated that intellectuals should take an active role in introducing Khojali genocide to the world. According to Seyidaga Movsumov, Khojali experienced a kind of systematic extermination that was never seen before and that the perpetrators will need to be taken to justice. The program ended with a video including Samil Sabiroglu’s photographs and Zemine Axundova’s drama ‘Voices from Khojali.’

MINISTER for FOREIGN AFFAIRS TO VISIT THE UNIVERSITY
Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr.Abdullah Gül paid a visit to the university during his official visit to Azerbaijan on June, 20. While entering the institution he saw the banner that read ‘Qafqaz University is the masterpiece of Heydar Aliyev’ and he spoke highly about him stating that ‘Our distinguished leader! We follow your saying ‘one nation, two countries’ in our activities and hearts. We have learned a great deal from him. May he rest in peace.’ Mr.Rector and Mr Enver Ozeren, the president of Cag Educational, also shared the same thought in their speeches, adding that Ilham Aliyev, the president of Azerbaijan, is a successful follower. Mr.Gul, in his speech, emphasized on the importance of the national and international achievements of Cag Educational. The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkey congratulated 9 students of Turkish High Schools on their achievements in scientific olympiads last year.

SUMMER SCHOOL
Qafqaz University organized a summer school in cooperation with Magdeburg University of Germany with the help of DAAD. 15 students spent 3 weeks in this valuable program gaining international experience and learning about Azerbaijani language, culture and history. The students had the chance to talk to some official people, including the German Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Mr. Per Cristophey Stanchina, and Vice Minister of Education, Mr. E. Qasimov. Mr. Qasimov stated that a great deal of Azerbaijani students go to Germany for education and hoped that the number of German students coming to Azerbaijan would increase. The fact that the German students became quite satisfied with the university conditions led the way to organize another summer school for 2007, but this time including a one-week program at a Georgian university as well, in order to make the experience even more international.

COMMEMORATION of ATATURK
Ataturk, great Turkish state founder, was commemorated in 68th year of his death at a program organized by the university on 10th November. Talks were made regarding his high leadership ability and statesmanship. Mr. Sanic, Rector, addressed the students, stating that “I believe if Ataturk had seen you the young students, he would have felt more and more pride.” Mr. U.A.Bolek’s talk was on his role in the war of independence, and the revolutions he had realized in many social and economic fields.

BRITISH AMBASSADOR WAS AT THE UNIVERSITY
Mr. Laurence Bristow visited the university to address the students on Great Britain’s foreign policy and international relations. He mentioned about the friendship between Azerbaijan and Great Britain, and its importance. He also talked about the important role Mr. Haydar Aliyev played in the recent history of Azerbaijan. He insisted that the conflict between Azerbaijan and Armenia on Mountainous Karabakh be resolved in just and peaceful ways. After his valuable speech, he visited the newly opened dormitory building.

CHARITY CONCERT
On of the 21 university clubs operating at the university, the charity club named after Zeynelabidin Tagiyev, the famous businessmen who helped a great deal to the prosperity of Azerbaijan paying special attention to the education of his people, organized a charity concert on October, 19, to raise money to help the people in need. After the coctail and a chartiy exhibition, renown singers of the country sang their most famous songs, namely Agadadas Agayev, Semistan Alizamanli, Gullu Muradova, and Babek Quliyev. Agadadas Agayev, also expressed his will to become a member of the club which was met by instant membership with joy!

MINISTER of FOREIGN AFFAIRS of TURKEY VISITED THE UNIVERSITY
Mr.Abdullah Gul, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Turkey, visited Qafqaz University on June, 20. He stated that he kept the late President’s motto ‘one nation, two countries’ in his heart all the time. He also stated that he had learnt a great deal from him and wished that he may rest in peace. During the welcome program, Prof.Ahmet Sanic, the Rector, and Mr.Enver Ozeren, the President of Cag Educational Corporation emphasized the very same fact that if it weren’t for Mr.Haydar Aliyev, such a university, ten Turkish high schools, and ten Araz University Preparatory courses would be impossible. Mr. Gul presented nine students of Azerbaijani-Turkish High Schools with presents owing to their success in last year’s International Scientific Olympiads.

MINISTER of EDUCATION OF TURKEY PARTICIPATING in the OPENING
In his official visit, Minister of Education, Huseyin Celik, participated in the official opening of the new educational building at the university campus which was joined by the Azerbaijani Minister of Education, Misir Merdanov, on November, 2. He visited the administrative rooms, and the classrooms each of which was furbished with 7.1 sound system, a computer, and a data projector. In the conference hall he gave the first part of his speech in Azerbaijani, which was met with enjoyment. He emphasized the fact that the educational bonds between the two countries were getting stronger thanks to the policy initiated by late President Mr. Haydar Aliyev, and his follower Mr. Ilham Aliyev, the Current President of Azerbaijan. Mr. Merdanov stated that Qafqaz University had a unique place in the educational system, and that it was the top-rated university, and Cag Educational High Schools represented Azerbaijan in many international scientific olympiads, earning more than a 150 medals.

TURKISH MINISTER of INDUSTRY at QAFQAZ UNIVERSITY
In his official three-day visit to Azerbaijan together with 25 businessmen, Ali Coskun, the Minister of Industry of Turkey visited the university as well. He stated that, he was happy to have played a role himself in the establishment process of the university, and that the level the university reached today brought tears to his eyes. Talking to the students in the conference hall, he advised that the students pay attention to their national values along with their educational program, and aim at high to raise the present level Azerbaijan occupies among the other nations.

LOCAL GOVERNORS’ VISIT
In the course of the program to organize ‘iftar’ dinners for the poor in Gulistan Palace and Yegane Palace, a concert given by Ibrahim Erkal, a famous Turkish folk singer, and Azerin, renown Azerbaijani singer at Haydar Aliyev Palace, and to make official contacts with the Azerbaijani partners, a group of Turkish local governors paid a visit to the university to talk to the students. Hasan Can, Umraniye – Istanbul local governor, said that the ties between Turkey and Azerbaijan are so strong that no one can ever dare to break, in response to Prof.Ahmet Sanic’s reminder of Ataturk’s statement: “Azerbaijan’s joy is our joy and her sorrow is our sorrow.” Mr. Can also presented Mr. Enver Ozeren a cartoon which his institution prepared in memory of War of Gallipoli in World War II. Hakan Oz, Yenidogan local governor, stated that he shared his colleague’s view, and admitted that he couldn’t express how happy he was being with his brothers and sisters in Azerbaijan.

SEMINAR IN MEMORY of the LATE PRESIDENT
In the program related to the commemoration of Mr. Aliyev, Mr. Sanic spoke about Mr. Haydar Aliyev’s role in the establishment of the independent state, institutionalization of her, and introducing Azerbaijan to the world. He reminded Mr. Aliyev’s famous saying ‘one nation, two states’ implying Azerbaijan and Turkey are sister countries. Next, Mr. Nizami Jafarov (Director of the Ataturk Center, MP, and correspondent member of Institute of National Sciences of Azerbaijan) took the floor, mentioning Mr. Aliyev’s high political skills and deep experience in state affairs. He stated that Mr. Aliyev’s enlightening ideas would live forever, which was followed by presentation of a documentary video related to Mr. Haydar Aliyev’s life.

OUR SOVERIGNTY IS ETERNAL
In order to celebrate the Day of Independence, a program named ‘Our Independence is Eternal and Unshakable’ was organized at the university. Mr. Rector mentioned about the irreplaceable services of Mr. Haydar Aliyev, the wise and powerful political character, in the formation and institutionalization of the independent state. He stated that the independence was a historical milestone, and that it should be protected by all means. After several other speeches, the students performed a drama related to the significance of the day.

THE MINISTER of EDUCATION TO RECEIVE MEDAL of HONOR
Prof.Misir Merdanov has received a medal of honor from the President of Azerbaijan, which has caused great joy among the educational staff. In order to share this joy, October, 9, a group of Cag Educational representatives, Mr.Enver Ozeren, CEO, Prof.Ahmet Sanic, Rector, Mr. Adem Onal, General Director, and Mr. Arif Gomleksiz, General Director for Araz Courses paid a visit to Mr. Merdanov in his office. Mr. Merdanov was presented with a plate in memory of this event. Having expressed his gratitude to what Cag Educational has done so far, he stated that after two or three years, many schools in Azerbaijan will have been renovated and refurbished in accordance with modern demands. He also stated that Cag institutions have acted as a sample for the innovations.

FAMOUS SOCCER PLAYER RASIM KARA at the UNIVERSITY
Legendary goal keeper of Besiktas and the Turkish national team, Rasim Kara, spent some time with the students in the conference hall. On completion of his work with Xazar-Lenkeran soccer team, he admitted that he had learned a great deal from Azerbaijan. He also said that Azerbaijan became his second motherland. He stated that he appreciated the facilities here and wished that the students would be loyal to and serve their country after graduation.

CONSTANT IMPROVEMENT…
Qafqaz University has now the privilege of offering doctoral degrees in addition to its current 20 B.A. and 10 M.A programs. The mission of the university is to produce graduates with advanced computer and language skills. In order to meet this mission, the university focuses on employing quality lecturers from around the world as well as preparing the necessary learning environment for the students, including apprenticeship opportunities abroad.
This academic year, most of the students who have been enrolled have more that 400 marks in the university entrance examination, 32 of them passing 600. The top possible mark a student can get from this examination is 700. It is motivating to state what the top student of the 3rd group, Gulnar Zulfuqarova, has to say: ‘When the results were announced, we were summoned to SCSE (State Commission for Student Enrollment). It was met with surprise that whereas the other students chose the state universities, I chose a department of teaching at Qafqaz University. Well, it shouldn’t be a surprise since I did a bit of research about the university beforehand and talked to its students. I want to be a teacher, an occupation which I believe is the future of my country. All the occupations might be considered to be satisfying; however it is the teacher who teaches them all.’

EUROPEAN STUDENT FORUM
European Student Forum visited the university with an intention to both cooperation and introduction on October, 5, at the university. Dr.Hakan Acar, vice-rector for international relations, spoke about the importance of the ESF that was formed in 1985 in Paris to increase inter-youth dialog in Europe. The representatives of the ESF stated that they were willing to increase the relations with the university and that they were quite satisfied with what the facilities the university offered to its students.

XIRDALAN IS NOW A CITY
Owing to the pleasant event that Xirdalan County has been given the status of ‘city’, a program was organized at the university in which talks were delivered by Prof.Dr. Ahmet Sanic, the rector, Mr. Enver Ozeren, the CEO of Cag Educational Corporation, and Mr. Zakir Ferecov, the local governor. Mr. Ferecov gave information on the recent developments in Absheron district stating that his administration has paid special attention to building and refurbishing educational institutions.

A VISIT FROM UNIVERSITY of LONDON
A professor of University of London, Mr. John Weeks who has been here in Azerbaijan for a long-term project of the Asian Development Bank visited Qafqaz University together with another colleague from the same university and Asian Development Bank representatives on 7 December 2006. After being introduced to the university facilities, he delivered a seminar on the topic of Macro-economic Stability in Oil Exporting Countries to a group of students from the Faculty of Economic and Administrative Sciences and the Faculty of Law.

EUROPEAN STUDENTS FORUM at QU
A group of representatives of the administrators of the European Students’ Forum paid a visit to Qafqaz University. They were given information about the university in a program in which Vice-Rector Hakan Acar, PhD, who is responsible for international relations also attended. In return, the visitors made a presentation about the Forum affairs.

QAFQAZ MBA PROGRAM
Qafqaz University is getting prepared for the second enrollment for its MBA program offering the major of Management that started at the beginning of 2006. The program is delivered by lecturers with a great deal of experience both in the academic and the business world. The program also covers conferences and workshops on the modern business world, its demands, and current problems. Experienced businessmen are invited to attend these events.

CISCO CERTIFICATION
Qafqaz University has gained the right of acting as the ‘Network Academy’ of worldwide renowned CISCO Systems, number one company in the field of networking technologies. CISCO Network Academy is a comprehensive e-learning program that serves large crowds all around the world. The program has started at the university after the agreement was signed by QU, UNDP, and AzNet Project. The next step is going to be organizing the CISCO Network Laboratory at the University.

COOPERATION FIELDS
• A five-month English Language course for a group of Bank of Baku staff.
• A 50-hour / 2.5-month computer course to around 100 teachers from Sumqayit in a project with Sumqayit Educational Department funded by Eurasian Fund.
• Automation project for Baku Blood Bank in cooperation with UNDP and Hemosoft from Turkey.
• Issuing two books related to the economy of Azerbaijan in cooperation with TUSIAB (Turkish Businessmen Assosication)
